About Umina and Umina Beach
Umina Beach is one of the Central Coast's most enjoyable and popular beaches particularly for families as it is ideal for swimming and surfing.
The suburbs name was derived its name from the Aboriginal word meaning Place of Sleep. The district was home back then to the Aboriginal Guringai tribe which covered from the Northern end of Sydney Harbour right through to the Southern end of Lake Macquarie. It sits on Brisbane Waters National Park with its 12,000ha of beautiful, rugged sandstone countryside which includes Aboriginal engravings, walking tracks, wildflowers and wildlife.
Mt. Ettalong Lookout is close by offering spectacular panoramic views of Umina and Ettalong, South across Broken Bay and all the way down to Palm Beach.
The suburb has two beaches, Ocean Beach and Umina Beach, both connected to each other. A popular tourist attraction at Umina is the Sand Castle Contest help every year.
History of Umina Beach and Umina
Originally established in 1917 as a holiday resort town, it was originally connecting to Woy Woy train station by a car service.
Expeditions into the Umina area first took place in March 1788 when Governor Arthur Phillip landed at Ettalong Beach which adjoins Umina. A more thorough investigation of Brisbane Waters was then conducted in the middle of 1789. The explorers stopped for a few days at Ettalong Beach before heading through The Rip, the dangerous passage which leads into Brisbane waters and to Umina Beach.
On the way back, they made camp at Ettalong Beach and then headed off to Dangar Island in the Hawkesbury River. These days they would be able to spend some great nights sleep at any of the wonderful selection of accommodation that Umina and Umina Beach has to offer.
