Choosing your destination is the first step in your trip planning. It may be obvious and somewhat simple but let’s have a look at the things you need to think about when you do your trip planning.
Some things will be running around in your head when you are deciding on your destination but, so you don’t make any mistakes, let’s list some of the bigger worries.
OK, so you have some holiday time due to you from work. Is it a set time of year that you are not able to change? The time of year that you holiday will play a major part in choosing your final destination. Do you want to go to a place where it is nice and hot so that you can just sit and relax on a beach or somewhere cold enough to ski? Are you planning it around a festival or doing what you can to avoid the crowds?
Do you want to do something active such as skiing or bushwalking or do you just want to sit around and do some relaxing or head out sightseeing, exploring museums or shopping? Maybe you wish to have the option to go either or all. Do you have children or other family members to consider? It’s always good to make it a family decision when you can.
Should you go on you own or with a crowd? You also need to decide if you want to travel on your own or if you are going to join a tour group where everything is planned.
How long do you have for your vacation? If you only have a week, that will, of curse, limit what you can do and where you can go. If you have two or three weeks or more then you have far more options open to you when choosing your destination. You can go further and plan for more activities or more relaxation time. Some say that it takes a week to unwind so even if you simply wish want to relax for a few days, you may need more than a week to get slip into that relaxed state of mind.
Choosing a destination that offers a relaxing venue will help such as a beach, spa or maybe a cabin on a nice quiet lake. For some people, shopping is their choice of relaxation!
Another factor we need to take into account is money. If you have plenty to throw around then the sky is your limit when choosing your destination. Maybe Europe staying in a castle or Africa where you could fly from safari camp to camp or go to Asia or Antarctica! You can go to all of those places on a budget as well of course but it does take some more planning on your part.
Of course you can economise and go camping or even travel and stay with friends or relatives. Do you wish to go by car, train, cruise ship or plane? I have heard of one person who will not fly and will not go on a ship so that definitely limits their range of choices.
So where will you go? I know I haven’t given you any destinations from which to choose but that would take some of the fun from it. Where would you like to go? What would you like to do?
Part of the fun of any vacation adventure is dreaming about all the different options open to you so you’ll need to take all of these factors into account in your trip planning. This is the fun, dreaming part of trip planning where you get to travel in your mind before you even take one physical step. Shortly I’ll write about finding information to follow through with these dreams.
