Enjoy The Wildlife

Although the NSW Central Coast area is famous for its Surf and Sand and its own wild nightlife in some places, it is also home to a wide variety of native Australian animal wildlife. So, if you're interested in conservation and habitat, or just want to check out the local flora and fauna, there are plenty of places to do this in the NSW Central Coast area.

Australian Reptile Park
An exhilarating, hands-on zoo for all the family, the Australian Reptile Park is famous for its animal interaction. Have your photo taken with a python, take a walk with Hugo the Giant Galapagos Tortoise or watch Australia's largest crocodile being fed. With its regular Kids 2 Keeper events, your children can even experience a day in the life of an Australian Zoo Keeper - feeding the animals, meeting all kinds of interesting creatures and even watch a snake being milked for its venom. The Australian Reptile Park comes strongly recommended for a fun, family day out.

Australia Walkabout Park
At the Australia Walkabout Park, you can encounter some of Australia's most well-known wild animals in their natural habit and even learn the lay of the land. Whether it's wild emu and kangaroo feeding or learning how to throw a boomerang, the Ranger-led activities will have you learning all about the bush wildlife and habitat. You can even learn more about the aboriginal way of life from Bush Tucker to Bush Medicine. And if it takes your fancy, you can even have a go at the old didgeridoo.

Whale Watching
There is no better way to watch the local marine life than with a whale watching boat trip. Whale Watching boats head out from several locations on the coast on 3 to 4 hour cruises where you can encounter whales up close in their natural habitat. These trips are highly seasonal however, operating during June and July (while the whales head North to warmer water) as well as throughout October and November (while the whales head back South). Of course, whale sightings are not guaranteed but by taking you out during these months, Fantasea maximizes the chance that you'll see numerous whales during their migratory periods.

A Guide To Accommodation On The Central Coast

When looking for NSW Central Coast accommodation, you can choose from quaint bed and breakfasts, spacious beach houses, self contained apartments, friendly hotels, luxury resorts and even cosy caravans. It all depends on where you want to stay and how much you want to spend on your Central Coast NSW accommodation.

Camping, Cabins and Central Coast Holiday Parks

A camping holiday at the beach is a perfect way to spend time with your family and friends. Barbeques during the warm evenings after a day swimming and surfing at the beach is popular on the NSW Central Coast. There are a number of fantastic places to camp, hire a caravan, or rent a cabin, from basic no-frills campsites to extravagant holiday parks with everything you need and more. For great family accommodation, central coast caravan parks are a great idea.

Umina Beach, just over 100km north of Sydney is an ideal destination for a camping holiday with Ocean Beach Holiday Park (also known as Umina Beach Caravan Park) situated right next to the beach with some of the camping sites overlooking the ocean. The holiday park also has cabins on site for those travellers that like a bit more comfort.

Hotels and B&B's

For some well priced hotels, motels and B&B's, it's worth considering Avoca accommodation with m much of it right on the beautiful coast. Also, Gosford is just twenty minutes by car from the coast and the amount of accommodation options keeps the prices down. Central Coast hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts and some great central coast apartments can all be found close to the main roads. Whilst Gosford isn't generally the first place you think of staying whilst on holiday on the coast, it is a well-connected hub to many of the Central Coast beaches and Bouddi National Park close by.

On the other hand, places like Avoca Beach and Copacabana are great places for surfing and other water sports being so close to the beach and having a wide range of amenities. Here you'll find a selection of hotels and B&B's to suit most budgets and apartments are also available here ranging from basic to luxury.

Central Coast Beaches

Terrigal Beach

Terrigal Beach has to be one of the best known of the Central Coast beaches alongside its trendy but picturesque sea side town which is lined by its famous tall pine trees. In Terrigal, you’ll find comfortable alfresco dining, boutique fashion stores and a great little shopping strip for all your needs. There is always activity along the seafront with a fresh sense of life all the time. Terrigal Beach is patrolled throughout the year providing safe swimming for young families. For beginners to the world of surfing, you can book a surf lesson with the Central Coast Surf School which can be great fun. Terrigal has a small harbour called The Haven which is a popular place for divers.

Copacabana Beach

Copacabana Beach sits just a few kilometres South of Avoca and is a popular patrolled surfing beach families as it suits all standards of surfer. Copacabana also features a popular whale viewing platform from where you can watch the humpback whales migrating through the warmer waters off the Central Coast. Best times are between late May and early August. The whales often come quite close to the coastline feeding on the plentiful food provided by the Northerly currents at that time of year.

Ocean Beach

Located in between Umina Beach and Ettalong Beach at the Southern end of the Central Coast is Ocean Beach. With over two kilometres of soft, golden sand on which to play, it is nestled within the protection of Broken Bay making it a popular area. Not only does it provide the beauty and spectacle of an ocean beach but also that of the safety of an inland waterway making it perfect for people wishing to learning to surf.

The Entrance Beach

The Entrance Beach is a popular place for lovers of the surf beach as well as more still waters. It is well positioned within a nice walking distance of many local attractions including the sea baths, the coastal boardwalk, a children's playground and park, an undercover BBQ area which includes picnic tables, shops, cafes and restaurants plus the weekend markets with their live entertainment. There is also a great range of accommodation here. Tuggerah Lake and The Entrance Channel are popular spots for boaties and anglers with boat ramps and several boat hire places.

Umina Beach

Apart from being a great beach, Umina Beach also has outstanding views over Bouddi National Park, Lobster Beach and over to the spectacular Lion Island. With the spectacular Mt Ettalong lookout close by, Umina Beach is known as a reasonably safe beach for surfing. Surfing lessons area also available at Umina Beach and there is a rock pool down at the South end of the beach for those who’d prefer to splash about in the shallows rather than in the surf. Umina Beach backs onto a large recreation reserve with a great grassed area for play as well as a skate ramp, children’s playground, picnic facilities, tennis courts and a surf club.

Soldier’s Beach

Nestled at the picturesque Norah Head, Soldiers Beach has the benefit of being one of only a small number of Central Coast beaches where people don’t live. There is nowhere to shop and not even any place that you can book to stay. This makes it perfect for many people as it is about as natural as you will find anywhere on the New South Wales Central Coast. The way to take greatest advantage of Soldier’s Beach is to head to the Northernmost and highest point of the beach and, from there, take in the incredibly amazing view of the NSW Coastline.

Avoca Beach

Avoca Beach may well be the name that people think of when looking at the Central Coast. More commercialised than many other Central Coast beach areas, Avoca Beach is the front stage for a family friendly surfing and holiday resort strip which stretches along the NSW coastline from The Entrance right down to Macmasters Beach. Its wooded hills and soft, white sandy beaches, for which the coast is renowned, are a popular destination for people holidaying from Sydney and Newcastle. Avoca Beach sites grandly in between two impressive rocky headlands. It is an ideal location for fishing and recreational swimmers of all ages. The quality and the size of the surf can be variable between one end of Avoca Beach to the other however this means that it will suit beginners right through to experienced surfers.

North Avoca

North Avoca Beach is a great place for the more experienced surfer as it is known for its powerful north-easterly swells which bring the more experienced surfers to the beach for the challenges. Sitting in between Terrigal Beach and Avoca Beach, it is also a great location for an enjoyable beach walk. Whilst the beach is patrolled, visitors are advised to watch out for rips in the surf which are usually more common at the Northern end. For puppy lovers, there is a popular dog walking area between Avoca and North Avoca Beaches so be sure to bring pooch out for a run in the fresh air.

Toowoon Bay
Toowoon Bay Beach received an award for being Australia’s Cleanest Beach in 2007. Not satisfied with just one award, it was also named the Friendliest Beach because of its commitment to safety and visitor hospitality. Toowoon Bay Beach is a protected picturesque, horseshoe-shaped beach which makes it ideal for families. The bay is surrounded by a reef which low tide exposes and offers protection from the ocean swells providing a safer, family friendly, swimming area. Plenty of parking is usually available and a lovely grassed reserve sits next to the beach making it ideal for family picnics.

Macmasters Beach

Macmasters Beach really is one of the areas absolutely unspoilt and most picturesque beaches and is well rated in the top one hundred surf beaches in Australia. Over the summer holiday period and during weekends over Winter, Macmasters Beach Surf Life Saving Club patrols the surf beach for safe swimming. .Just a small beach, it also has a tidal pool next to the surf club and is a popular spot for kids. Bordered by Bouddi National Park Macmasters Beach can also be accessed by bushwalking trails.

Shelly Beach

Shelly Beach is a popular surfing beach being located close to The Entrance, Bateau Bay and Long Jetty. It exhibits some beautiful natural rock features which are popular for exploring on walks. Fully patrolled from October through to April, it is enjoyed for all that it offers including some great accommodation choices plus the pleasure of some major shopping centres close by.

Killcare Beach

Whilst Killcare Beach may well be regarded as one of the top ten Australian beaches, it jealously guards its beauty and seclusion. It is family friendly due to it being protected from the North-East and Easterly swells with rock pools in which the children and family can safely play. The surf at Killcare Beach can be somewhat of a challenge for many surfers however there is safer swimming down the Southern end of the beach. Considered to be one of the most beautiful and scenic National Parks on the coast of NSW, Bouddi National Park borders Killcare Beach at both ends providing bushwalkers with a great choice of walks to explore. Camping sites are also available.

Ettalong Beach

Ettalong Beach is positioned on the shallower waters of Broken Bay which means that it is generally a calmer beach than others. It is however perfect for swimming and enjoying watching the boaties as they head out to sail offshore. It is also recognised for its soft and firm sand which makes it easy for walking bare footed. The Palm Beach Ferry runs a regular service across to Palm Beach from Ettalong Beach. The Ettalong Beach Memorial Club has a large terrace which is popular overlooking the scenic water views making it close to the ideal location. In Ettalong Village, you should enjoy the selection of shops and, on weekends, the markets are worth visiting.

Wamberal Beach

Wamberal Beach is created by a picturesque and unspoilt stretch of sand which flows around from Terrigal Beach and is often an enjoyable escape from the crowded beaches. Note that its surf is known to be quite a challenge at times and often better for stronger surfers only. Wamberal Lagoon is a protected fauna and flora sanctuary and provides a more safe area for family fun.
